ARTIST STATEMENT

I started my life with a strong connection to detail, an unquenchable curiosity and a stubborn independence. As a little girl…much younger than I can remember, my parents took me to Sea World and despite all of the obvious activity; I have been told that I spent the entire afternoon on the floor with the ants. I was fascinated by them – the repetitiveness of their actions, their never ending persistence. The things that are close to me and the personality that I find in those things continue to intrigue me and become subjects of my work.

Much of my art focuses on symbols I find or the personality embedded within the objects of our daily surroundings. I tend to zoom into one or two things that are around me - often leaving the backgrounds of my pictures sparse or bare so that the viewer is not distracted from the beauty, personality, and/or detail that has caught my attention.

Temporary attractions to certain colors (cobalt blue, rusted-reddish browns) also drive me to particular subjects. The subject then determines the medium I use (watercolor, oils or pastels). The translucent beauty and saturation of color draws me to water media. But, I also love oils, particularly on wood. Painting on wood is a whole different feeling than painting on canvas and feels more natural to me.

The correlation between the natural world and creation intrigues me as does the duality of our existence. The continuing trend to move away from the world around us, which is such a part of us, is becoming a focus once again of my thoughts and is resurfacing in my art. Many of my pictures depict forces that bring about great change – those that create the ebb and flow. Others depict symbolic or actual relationships.

I strive to draw out the essence of the subjects that I capture and instill, even in the more serious pictures, a (sometimes odd) sense of humor. But, more than anything, I hope to evoke a reaction because I believe that this life is all about making connections.
